Inspiriations and Evolution of Lucky Throw

Postby Shadowclasper » Fri Jul 10, 2009 9:32 am

Lucky Throw started off one night after finishing reading through the Gaming Guardian Archives again. Without the influence of Graveyard Greg, Webtroll, and a few other writers and artists, I'd never have really gotten the idea for the webcomic. Realize now, that I have read over a hundred different webcomics, more than I can remember the names of or even have recorded, so a full list of inspirations is impossible. But it was Gaming Guardians that definitely started it all.

The thought that hit me that night, was basically "Wait. Why the hell isn't there a Dice based super hero." There were card based ones, and even a couple of super heros based around other gaming devices, but no one around Dice that I could name. (Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't count, as he was the "King of Games" and never stuck solely to dice). So I drafted a list of all the dice I'd heard of. I looked over it, messed with it a little, and eventually stayed with the d2, d3, d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d%, and d100 as the ones my hero would use.

Now, I've called myself an unofficial priest of the Lady, Fate, and the Dice Gods for a long time. I know all the little rituals and tricks to keep them off my back and on my side when gaming (it doesn't always work, but that's kinda the deal anyway). It was also reading through things like DMFA by Amber (missmab.com), and Gaming Guardians (again) that expanded on this world, and not the least, the works of Terry Pratchet's Diskworld (especially the Rincewind novels involving Luck and Fate). Where as DMFA and GG gave me the basis for how the multiverse of my world would work, it was Diskworld that set up the foundations for Fate, Luck, the Dooms, and a few other characters.

The rest evolved over about a year of dilligent idea jockeying, work, and planning, a lot of which came to no end. For example, the first few comics were to be about me GETTING to the actual comic, with the help of various assistants and creations of mine (Mostly the Demons my warlock, Hetros, uses on World of Warcraft). Also 3 floating, flaming, bunny skulls that each like a different food, carrots, cabbage, and brains. Those may still appear in the comic, but I doubt it.

It wasn't until I became truly active on the Drowtales chat forum that I really began work on my ideas. Kembaru, if you're reading this, then thank you. The Hand of Fate rp was one of the driving factors behind the creation of this comic and many of the ideas for the main villain were inspired by your Fate. I will never be able to repay you for it. As for any other people who were originally from Drowtales or Epitome of Awesome Forums, again, I thank you. For the wonderful ideas and the rps you set up, for your zanny creativity, and most of all beating a bit of a spine into me so I had the guts to begin work on my own webcomic.

As time went on, I had to draw more and more heavily upon various ideas. The Dwarves and Goblins, the Elves first incarnation, reading through The Elegant Universe, more Terry Pratchet novels, mythology and learning the themes in human literature and story telling, more making my world unique and hammering out the story line. By the time I finished, I had a setting for an entire RPG, not just my comic. Things were looking fantastic and it looked like I was ready to go. I started posting my comic with the prologue.

Things went nicely enough, but real life continued to be a problem. The printer stopped scanning, or I could never get a good enough printer, or a million other things. But the end result was the same, I had to put the comic up for indefinite hiatus until I could find an artist who would work for free. That took almost half a year to a full year before I asked Thindra about the quotation she put in her Drowtales forum signature. From that I learned she did the story and art for Guardians of Kurew. I showed her my own comic as I began reading the story and browsing the art of her own. To my great surprise, she agreed to work for free on my webcomic, and has done a wonderful job ever since. Thanks again Thindra, I know that's not enough, but nothing I could say would possibly be enough anyway, so please, accept it in the way I mean it ^^
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
